tbh i think george has the strongest merch when he's actually designing stuff or like pitching ideas, i don't think he design anything himself, because he goes with the flow, he used the supreme logo first bc that was his thing then when he got sued he changed it a bit and later when he became associated with cats he made the iconic 9 million cat merch which was amazing or the dino merch which also was very well received. versus sapnap for example who always goes with flames bc that's his whole brand (pandas too but he obviously doesn't want to include that at all) and it can feel a bit like ?? when you get different merch but it's all flame stuff in multiple variations. my point is idk how much sense it makes for ccs to have a strong brand as in having a set logo or something because they don't really need that recognition outside of fans and easy recognition that normal brands need bc the only ones who do buy merch are already fans and they want the whole parasocial, the cc themselves being the brand thing and imo being more flexible with it gives you a lot more opportunities as a cc

I do see your point and agree with his merch being iconic and well received in fan circles, but good reception doesn't always mean good or cohesive design. He's obviously not trying to literally be Supreme or any other designer fashion brand that have certain aesthetic rules in place, and he doesn't have to be. However, I still think his branding is messy with how multidirectional it is. He has good ideas and played into fan interests in the past, but brands lose their own identity when their best works are, for lack of a better term, pandering.

I think he has some great simple designs. I like the appropriation of Supreme, considering Supreme appropriated Barbara Krueger. I like how he branded clout goggles for himself. They are iconic to him for his fans and I love those things about him. But when I look at the bigger picture of branding, George has diversity with little consistency, Dream has diversity with lots of consistency, and Sapnap has consistency with little diversity.

I think it's important that content creators have a strong brand because that's how you build an audience and subsequently influence as influencers. Content creators are allowed to diversify and change over time, for better or worse, but the brand you put forward in merch should have brand recognition. Pewdiepie, as an example, has become known for the red and black patterns over his pfp. Though it's been adjusted and changed several times from squiggles to squares, so on, the basis of the brand remains. This means that if he gets any kind of big company collaboration, there is a unique icon and aesthetic to work from. If Dream and Sapnap were to get a collaboration for headphones or a gaming console or keyboard, they have cohesive branding that can be adapted to a product where George doesn't.

I have George merch and there is George merch that I love. I don't think his basics are bad, but artist to client, I would recommend he build a stronger brand image whilst still appeasing fans with certain special items.

Yeah that's the thing (or at least one of the things) - very rarely will you catch me legitimately promoting Dream to people who don't like him. I don't expect everyone to like him and in fact I'd be surprised if he didn't have a substantial group against him. I just personally like him and his content. But there's a difference between that and the objective facts of the matter - a lot of racist, homophobic, and misogynistic streamers/ccs/etc hate Dream's fanbase for their hyper-vigilance and general queerness. That's not me saying Dream's a paragon of goodness or that his fans are always fantastic people, it's just an actual, legitimate thing that's happening. You can go look. And denying that doesn't do anything but make you stupid and hurt a lot of young people (and even older members of the community).

So many creators are problematic and a great many beloved names are much worse than Dream both in intent and impact. Remember how #ThankYouScott trended after Scott Cawthon revealed that he's an anti-choice trumpie? Dream's not that kind of person and you can hate him more than anything in the world and still fucking acknowledge the difference. It drives me nuts.
